Moa’s example of breakthrough innovation

The year 2020, with the global disruption to normal work practices caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, showed the value in having good access to data and the ability to integrate it, build connectivity and forge new knowledge.

The President of CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has pointed to Moa as an example of a company focused on breakthrough innovation, which has continued to benefit from CAS Registry®.

As CAS observed in organisations around the world throughout 2020, working outside of the lab does not diminish the drive to learn, solve problems and innovate, so long as information keeps flowing.

Moa has been using CAS Registry® to provide high-quality chemical substance data to integrate with results from screens in order to prioritise candidates with profiles of interest from as yet untapped resources.

With the growing threat that herbicide resistant weeds pose to crop yields and global food security, Moa has the ability to make connections between dispersed, diverse data, not only allowing focus and prioritisation, but making the discovery process much more efficient and reducing the time to market for effective new herbicides.

CAS chemical substance data accelerates herbicide discovery at Moa

Moa and CAS have announced an agreement to embed chemical substance data from the CAS REGISTRY® directly into Moa’s R&D workflow.

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, has the largest and highest quality collection of such information in the world including references, chemical substances, proteins, reactions, physical and chemical properties, formulations, bioactivity data, and much more.

Moa’s scientists will have access to the most relevant, actionable chemical substance data within their daily workflow to quickly assess activity, enhancing productivity and expediting innovation.

Dr Shuji Hachisu, CTO at moa said: “We are partnering with CAS because our evaluation demonstrated that integrating their unique scientist-curated substance data collection with our novel in-vivo platforms greatly enhances our ability to deliver new solutions faster to help farmers while reducing the environmental impact of agriculture.”

Craig Stephens, Chief Customer Officer at CAS added: “We are confident this custom solution that incorporates high-quality CAS data at the point of need in Moa’s screening process will dramatically reduce their investment per candidate.”

CDD Vault boosts Moa’s herbicide discovery

Moa is successfully running CDD Vault, a comprehensive informatics platform from San Francisco-based Collaborative Drug Discovery Inc.  CDD Vault brings unique advantages to archiving, mining and analysing chemistry and biology research data from Moa’s in vivo herbicide discovery platforms (GALAXY, TARGET and SELECT).

CDD Vault is a versatile research and development data management platform, that includes functionality to manage chemical structures and assay data. The structured screening data generated by Moa platforms is stored and analysed in CDD Vault and the unstructured experimental descriptions are recorded in CDD Vault ELN (electronic notebook). MoA Tech has automated several data transfer processes using CDD Vault’s API, thus optimising the efficiency of the whole setup.

“We have been using CDD Vault productively for over a year now,” said Dr. Shuji Hachisu, CTO of moa. “CDD is a flexible system ideally suited for early stage companies going through explosive growth as it is easily customisable and at the same time scalable. It also offers a wide range of critical tools to an innovative biotechnology company through a simple web interface.”

“We are very excited to see CDD Vault being used to manage a variety of data beyond our traditional drug discovery market,” said Dr. Barry Bunin, CEO of CDD. “Moa has data with high level of complexity and CDD Vault has the flexibility to manage all their data types, including high resolution images, screening numerical data, plant sample metadata and chemical compounds. It is also great to see the ELN being used to its full extent. It is an exciting company with a bright future ahead and we are proud to count them among our customers.”
